Giving the Gift of Sight: Why Your Old Glasses Still Matter

Across Australia, organisations like the Lions Club collect donated prescription glasses through their national spectacle recycling program. The glasses are cleaned, measured, sorted, and then provided to humanitarian eye care teams working in developing countries where access to eye care and affordable glasses is extremely limited.

Brad our Optical Dispenser at Young Eyes describes seeing firsthand how much we take clear vision for granted. Something as simple as reading a book, recognising a face, or being able to work safely isn't possible for many people simply because they don't have access to a pair of glasses.

This Friday, Brad will be volunteering with The South Pacific Eyecare Foundation (SPEC Foundation), working alongside optometrists, optical dispensers and other volunteers to provide eye care throughout Fiji. Many of the glasses we'll be dispensing have been generously donated by industry partners and donation programs like the Lions Club, making every donated pair an opportunity to improve someone's quality of life.

At Young Eyes, we're proud to support the Lions Club Spectacle Donation Program by providing a collection point for unwanted glasses. If you've recently updated your prescription, instead of leaving your old glasses in a drawer, consider donating them.

It only takes a moment to drop them off, but that simple act could help someone see clearly, return to work, continue their education or regain their independence. Something that no longer has value to us can have an incredible impact on someone else's life.
